The world produces close to 400 million tons of plastic every year. The production of plastics contributes significantly to climate change as it generates massive greenhouse gas emissions over the course of its lifecycle. Plastics that are produced and consumed on land, are dumped into our oceans, leading to the adverse human health impacts, and destruction of biodiversity and habitat. The challenge of addressing plastics pollution also exacerbates the equity and justice impacts in marine and coastal communities. The plastics lifecycle accentuates the disproportionate burdens of environmental hazards on the Global South and on communities around the world that are already marginalized, notwithstanding the overconsumption of the Global North and the limited capacity of waste and plastic management in the Global South. Arising out of the environmental justice movement, ocean justice seeks to address and balance ocean conservation and social equity issues.
