At Ocean Nexus, our mission is to establish social equity at the center of ocean governance.

Transformational change begins with understanding how our relationship with the ocean deeply affects social justice and equity. Guided by principles of equity and justice, we connect scholars worldwide to share stories centered around historically marginalized perspectives. Researching the interconnections between inequities unique to each context and understanding the governance of the oceans is core to our ocean equity research and communications strategy. Our work holds powerful interests accountable for the consequences of systemic inequities. At Ocean Nexus, we aspire to create equitable oceans for humanity.

Values

Anti-Racist – We lead by taking anti-racist actions to dismantle systemic inequities within decision-making processes and outcomes.

Empathy – We prioritize dignity and well-being of people to ensure our relationships are more important than our collaborative research output.

Decolonization – We uplift the narratives of those who have been historically marginalized by prioritizing deconstruction and trust building.

The Nippon Foundation

Ocean Nexus is an ocean research institute built on The Nippon Foundation’s program for marine research capacity building. In collaboration with The Nippon Foundation we develop innovative research aimed at bridging the gap between academics, policymakers, and those most dependent on the ocean.

Action Framework

We deliberately confront and dismantle structural and systemic social inequities existing in ocean governance. Using a unique interdisciplinary approach that combines social science, policy research, and natural science research, we study the changes, responses, and solutions to societal issues of oceans. Our research informs evidence-based policies and bridges the gap between decision-making and the voices of people dependent on oceans. Each Ocean Nexus Action Area supports scholars around the world to deepen our commitment to ocean equity and justice.

Policy Analysis

Fellowship

Ocean Nexus creates opportunities for ocean researchers to integrate socio-political perspectives in their thinking on issues historically considered environmental, and to critique and challenge the existing power structures through research.

Communications

Ocean Nexus strives to advance narratives that dismantle inequity and injustice. Through purposeful engagement and storytelling, we aim to amplify the voices of those most impacted by social inequity in the ocean space.

Network

Ocean Nexus engages with the community through empathy as we confront structural inequities in ocean governance. Our network extends beyond ocean experts as ocean inequity is intertwined with societal inequities and injustices.

Policy Analysis

Ocean Nexus integrates policy analysis within our research to find actionable solutions. We work to provide training and professional development opportunities for our Fellows to build policy analysis capacity. Through this platform, we aspire to develop work that is more directly relevant to the policymaking process.
