Quentin Hanich is a Professor of Fisheries Governance the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, where he leads the Fisheries Governance Research Program. Quentin has worked widely throughout the Indo-Pacific region in various international partnerships focusing on ocean governance, emerging technologies, marine conservation, fisheries management and development. He is particularly interested in strategic research and capacity-building projects that support equitable ocean outcomes for coastal developing States. With this goal in mind, he engages closely with governments, stakeholders and international fora, and develops collaborative studies and courses that address current and future ocean governance and policy challenges.
In addition to his academic work, he has chaired international working groups, facilitated inter-governmental workshops, and advised Ministerial meetings, national delegations and sub-regional groups. He is currently the Chair of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission’s (IOTC) Technical Committee on Allocation Criteria, and a member of the United Nations Pool of Experts for the World Ocean Assessment and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas.
Quentin has built a substantial research record with real-world impact, with multiple publications in global high impact journals. He has written over 130 peer-reviewed papers, chapters and reports. He has a high citation factor of (H-index 33) and has been cited widely in development and governance reports and committees, academic literature, and media. He has supervised nine PhD students to completion, and is currently the principal supervisor for six PhD students. He is a regular peer reviewer for numerous globally respected journals, and was Editor-in-Chief of the global journal Marine Policy from 2019-2024. He has developed and taught undergraduate and post-graduate subjects, post-graduate courses, and professional short courses on international negotiations, fisheries management, and ocean governance.
