Kate Barclay, Ph.D.

Director of the Climate Society and Environment Research Centre (C-SERC)

Collaborating Professor

Climate, Society and Environment Research Centre (C-SERC), University of Technology Sydney

Dr. Kate Barclay is Director of the Climate Society and Environment Research Centre (C-SERC) at the University of Technology Sydney. Kate researches the social aspects of fisheries, aquaculture and marine conservation. Since the late 1990s she has researched the sustainable development of tuna resources in Asia and the island Pacific in the context of changing governance systems and globalisation. One strand of her work over the last decade has been to develop frameworks for monitoring social and economic impacts in marine contexts – understanding how seafood industries and marine conservation contribute to social wellbeing – in Pacific Island countries, Indonesia and Australia. She has also been working in collaboration with organisations and researchers in the Pacific to develop two Handbooks that translate research about social equity issues in fisheries and aquaculture for fisheries managers – the Pacific Handbook for Gender Equity and Social Inclusion in Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the Pacific Handbook for Human Rights, Gender Equity and Social Inclusion in Tuna Industries.

Kate’s personal interests include food – especially vegetables and seafood (loves seaweed!) – cooking, and eating with people. Yoga. Bushwalking. Playing in the surf (“can’t actually surf”). Skiing and snow hiking. Snorkelling. She recently took up jogging. Hanging out with her teenage children when they will let her.
