Joe-Silem Enlet is a Ph.D. student in Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. His research explores the political ecologies and indigenous relationalities of Chon Chuuk (“people of Chuuk”) through a study of fishing and fisheries management in Chuuk in Micronesia.  

As an island boy, born and raised on the island of Weno and descending from the clans of Wiito and Soor, Joe is deeply interested in investigating and centering Indigenous knowledge and ontologies as foundations for the protection and stewardship of the sea and all its life-forms. As an indigenous researcher and policy advocate, he hopes to continue to raise Indigenous voices to contribute to local and regional policy dialogues on ocean governance, fisheries development, and climate resilience in Oceania.

Joe enjoys playing music, fishing and swimming, and spending time with his family and friends over coffee and eating locally prepared food.
