Jared Kolok
Student Fellow
International Relations, University of Rhode Island
Jared is pursuing a master’s in international relations at the University of Rhode Island with a focus on marine governance regimes within and beyond national jurisdictions. Originally from the Midwest, Jared has long been fascinated by the ocean. With dual bachelor’s degrees in political science and biology Jared works at the interface of natural science and policy. Drawing on experience in the nonprofit sector, and as an intern with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Jared is focused on integrating equity and environmental justice into marine policymaking, while recognizing the legacies of colonialism and the value of knowledge systems beyond Western science.
Jared’s research interests include the role of United Nations negotiations and conventions in conservation and sustainable use of common marine resources. Jared is particularly drawn to Arctic and Pacific Island issues. His research seeks to address gaps in international regimes that marginalize indigenous peoples, their rights, and their contributions through traditional knowledge.
Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, Jared enjoys long walks on the beach with his schnauzer-poodle mix, reading environmental fiction, and experimenting with watercolors.
