Research Fellow

School of Environmental Studies, University of Victoria

Dr. Hazem Almassry is a Palestinian postdoctoral researcher at the University of Victoria, Canada. His current research interests are in ocean governance under political constraint, in particular the question of the impact of conflict, occupation, and geopolitical fragmentation on access, management, and rights claiming of coastal communities. This research is a follow-on to a wider research field focusing on political economy and the relations between the EU and the Middle East and North Africa (EU-MENA relations), green hydrogen diplomacy, and critical theory. Specifically, he focuses on issues of sovereignty, extractivism, and epistemologies that render some groups and voices visible and others invisible in international research. He is also engaged in non-academic writing in Arabic and English on Palestinian memory, diaspora, and resistance.
