“Human Dimensions of Oceans: From a Sociological Perspective” blog series is live on FATHOM.

The Ocean Nexus visual brand is purposefully understated, designed to highlight our institute’s research. A combination of visual, editorial, and experiential elements help convey our collective vision, enriching our understanding of social equity in ocean governance. Principles guiding our process:

Make it easy to access and read our work.

Communicate with clarity. We focus our core message and do not use flashy graphics.

Make decisions considering the full Ocean Nexus experience on all platforms and interfaces.

Strengthen our presence by using our visual brand assets to integrate identity throughout our work.

Logo

Our logos can be used to support your storytelling in unique scenarios: presentations, conferences, and/or flyers—the choice is yours. Our primary Ocean Nexus logo has a deep blue color and a translucent wave. This logo also comes in alternative orientations to suit any digital scenario. If you prefer to create content over a dark background we also have this entire logo system available in white.

Logomark

Logo Lockup

When displaying The Nippon Foundation logo and Ocean Nexus logo on the same page please make every effort to display them in different locations. If space restrictions necessitate placing them side-by-side, please maintain a margin of at least one-half the height of the logo between the two logos.

Lockup Example

Intellectual Foundation

Knowledge generated through our research fight for equitable ocean policy. The Ocean Equity Triangle is a visual storytelling tool to communicate our research framework.

Typography

At Ocean Nexus, our top priority is to create an easeful reading experience. We selected this combination of typefaces to communicate our research.

Gotham

Gotham’s geometric structure pairs well with our circular logomark. We believe Gotham’s bold shape helps convey our solid and grounded message.

Neue Haas Unica

We believe Neue Haas Unica’s sharpness and loose letterforms contribute to a comfortable digital reading experience.

Arial

A classic font, Arial is accessible to use and resembles closely to our website’s font Neue Haas Unica.

PT Serif

Free, open source font. We recommend using this font for longer readings. We use this typeface on our blog, Fathom.

Color

We selected low chroma colors to highlight text and evoke calmness when reading. Our color palette is inspired by the strength of the ocean and interdependent communities. Ocean Nexus, after all, is about ocean research.

Storytelling Through Design

The entire Ocean Nexus brand system, elements, and website was conceptualized, designed, and brought to life on 183 unique web pages of oceannexus.org by Ariel Wang and Nayon Kim.

Our brand identity reflects our deep commitment to communicate research cohesively and informatively in this digital age. In close partnership with Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus leadership, our brand system was fully developed and implemented with Taiwanese American project lead Ariel Wang and Korean multidisciplinary designer Nayon Kim to communicate ocean equity research and ensure open access for all.
